Anything is Possible  22.12.2009

What would you do if, at the age of 65 you had to sell up a profitable business and retire penniless? All of this because an interstate highway was built, effectively cutting off your supply of customers. For a little-known restauranteur, this setback paved the way for a tremendous comeback which saw him turn an idea into a multi-million dollar business.

As a youngster, he had a difficult upbringing after losing his father at the age of five. Subsequently, he had to look after his two younger siblings because his mother had to return to the work force (working in a factory) to feed the children. Sadly, his family was so poor that by the end of sixth grade, he too had to leave school to work full-time.

Over the next fifty plus years, he had a variety of jobs including a railroad man, insurance salesperson, streetcar conductor, military officer, steamboat operator, a lawyer (which ended abruptly after he was involved in a fight whilst in court) and a restaurant owner.

Rather than retire on a measly $105 a week government pension, he decided that he would sell one of his wonderful recipes, which had 11 secret herbs and spices. Dressed in a white suit (for which he would eventually be synonymous), he visited countless restaurants trying to sell his recipe. What he got was rejection after rejection: not just a few but over a thousand! It was not until he contacted the 1009th restaurant that someone finally agreed to buy his chicken recipe. The Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) Franchise was born and today there are over 11,000 KFC restaurants in more than 80 countries and territories around the world.

‘I made a resolve then that I was going to amount to something if I could. And no hours, nor amount of labour, nor amount of money would deter me from giving the best that there was in me. And I have done that ever since, and I win by it’ Colonel Harland David Sanders

Inside us all is incredible potential to achieve so much. No matter your age or background, there is always room to break through the shackles that bind us to a reality that is less than we deserve. Never underestimate your true capabilities and your ability to succeed despite the obstacles you face. I believe that life is too short to die wondering what could have been.

“Sail beyond the horizon; fly higher than you ever thought possible; magnify your existence by helping others; be kind to people and animals of all shapes and sizes; be true to what you value most; shine your light on the world; and be the person you were born to be.” BB

May you achieve everything you set out to in the year ahead. I wish you all the very best on your journey.
