Self Doubt - the Performance Killer  01.06.2006

Self doubt kills potential and performance. In his book, Psycho-Cybernetics, Dr Maxwell Maltz identifies lack of self esteem, self doubt and self image as the main reasons why people fail in life.

Have you ever noticed how the thoughts you have about yourself have a huge impact on performance? Let’s have a look at how it happens:

You have a board meeting coming up and you need to present in front of the big wigs of the company. As someone, who has always had difficulty speaking in front of people, this is a scary thought. There is a lot riding on this talk, particularly as there is a strong rumour that you might be a candidate for a promotion soon. So as you prepare for the speech, your mind starts talking louder to you:
You are not a good speaker. Who are you kidding? Get someone else to present for you. It is better than making a fool of yourself. Remember that last time you spoke in front of a big group - you had a mind blank.

This internal thought virus spreads quickly, making it very difficult for you to do a great job, because your thoughts are affecting the beliefs you have about yourself about your ability to present and your behaviour will suffer as a result.

So what do you do about it?

  • For one, quit listening to that destructive voice. By continuing to listen to your negative chatterbox, you give power to it. And the more power it gets, the harder it will be to do a good job.
  • Secondly, replace the negative thoughts with positive ones. “What you hear in your minds ear, will either give you confidence or fear.”At least twice a day (before you go to bed, and first thing in the morning) say your positive statement to yourself with meaning. In the case above, you might tell yourself: “I am a very good presenter.” It is also helpful to visualise yourself delivering a great presentation.

“The words you speak, and the words you think ultimately become the world you line in.” Robert Kiyosaki

If there is time, and you know you have certain deficiencies, get some training or coaching.

Don’t let self doubt hold your potential hostage. Use the steps mentioned above, and may you begin to rid yourself of self doubt and improve performance.

o The more you believe in yourself

o The more others will believe in you

o The more you will believe in yourself

o And the cycle continues……
